^ Haha me too~ Traveling is so energetic.

Meh, maybe it's just me, but her voice seems to be only suited for ballads and slower songs. Hikki fans, please don't kill me, but I've never felt the urge to get up and dance (like I did with BoA's "Valenti"), y'know? But whatever, she does magnificently in her style, which she constantly experiments with and works on.... Respect, that's all I can say.

The thing is, her music isn't really dance music
So while I understand where you're coming from,
I wouldn't say its because of her voice,
Its because of her overall style : 3

Even the songs with a really good bass aren't really dance songs.
Like the songs from Distance & First Love with groovy beats,
They're more of a 90's RnB sound. Not really Hip Hop or dance.

When I dance to Utada's music, its not really in a serious way hah
More like if I'm listening to it in the house I'll bounce around XD

I find Utada has a song for almost every sort of feeling,
Her music is less of a dancepop hit so much as an expression of day to day life.
I find the lyrics in BoA's music give me no inspiration in life whatsoever.
Its just really catchy, & good for when you're in the mood for predictable generic pop.
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just doenst hold the same importance haah.

I wouldn't say that ALL of BoA's song are "generic" pop songs.... a few escape that title, like "Moon and Sunrise," which is heartbreaking. The thing is, Avex basically doesn't give BoA the right to write her own songs. Utada's songs are deep in that she personally wrote them and was in creative control. Seriously, "Moon and Sunrise" is sad and touching because BoA wrote it.... so yeah, I'd say a good deal IS (though I love it) generic pop, but the ones that she took a large part of ("Everlasting," "Megastep," etc) are much deeper.

I'll agree with you there, since I absolutely love Moon & Sunrise (my fave BoA song =D)
She pulls out something really great once in a while, but for the most part,
While I do listen to a lot of her music I don't really find a lot of it touching or deep.
Not that all music has to be deep, but I just respect Hikki a ton more~

It makes me dance too! and so does This is Love!

yeah me too. i listen to all of the other mainstream stuff too and i enjoy it still but with Utada Hikaru I have a special appreciation for her material. It has a different feel to it compared to others and she definitely deserves her own genre. lol. she's just kick*** like that.

have you guys heard of jyongri? anyways, shes a jpop artist/songwriter that people compared to Utada HIkaru since she's a song writer and spent some time at Stanford University's music program in the U.S. Personally i dont see any connection. its kinda like how they compare utada as the britney spears of japan. silly people and all their labeling. can't she just be UTADA HIKARU.

*traveling -Original Karaoke- plays in the background*

I'd like to share something with you guys!

http://hikkistation.net/?page_id=451

The link above is to a translated interview with Hikki by MUSICA magazine in early 2007.

Credits: Sanosuke of Hikki Station, Grayzkule, GhostDog

I think it's a really detailed interview that should not be missed by all Hikki fans!
Lots of information, "including a brief discussion about “Exodus” and her next English album".

Well, I can gather from this interview that Hikki is a really interesting person (I mean, seriously).

^ Wow, that was extremely interesting to read.
Thanks for that! I've never seen such an in depth look at Utada.
You don't get the sense that shes some big star, shes very down-to-earth.
& its reflected in her music, definetely. Even without reading this interview,
You get that feeling just from listening to her music. With certain artists,
Its almost like no matter what feeling they write about, its all too calculated,
Or is just too... well, as I said before, generic. When Utada sings,
it really feels geniune.

I think thats probably the main reason why she so popular.
You can relate better to a song thats been written with a real feeling,
Than something thats been written with only the hopes of inspiring people.
You cant just write what you thinks others will like,
You have to put yourself into it to make it real.
Utada succeeds in that aspect completely~

I see.... but in the Korean industry AND music industry in general, it's very rare to find someone like Utada Hikaru who transcends the label of "pop music." I don't really listen to her anymore, but I admire her talent, creativity, and obvious PASSION (lol) for music, which should really serve as an inspiration to every other artist out there.

By the way, I know this is random, but if you like Utada Hikaru, listen to Epik High and Jay Chou; both are amazingly talented and clearly love music more than anything. Well, only thing is, Jay Chou's Mando-pop, but he, like Hikki, transcends that label with remarkable and unique music; Epik High just owns because of their fearlessness, creativity, and energy in their music; they are NOT in the slightest afraid of approaching controversial issues.

Just to get a little talk in here, which is your favourite Japanese "album-opening track"?
  • Automatic
  • Wait & See ~リスク~
  • SAKURA ドロップス
  • This Is Love
  • Fight The Blues
And in other news, I'm saving up for the Audio Technica ATH-SQ5 headphones that Hikki uses in the HEART STATION PV.

Ah, I wanted those, too haha
But I was like...100$? Knowing me I'd probably end up losing them...haha

This is Love, I'd say is the best.
Though, I absolutely love all 5 of those songs.
Its almost a tie with Sakura Drops, which I never used to be fond of,
But it grew on me. Does anyone else find its kind of similar to Nichiyou no Asa in a weird way?
