How Avex MVs Look Like After They've Been Fixed

01 February 2008 - 10:08 PM

Was talking to kuraudo about quality of MVs and such so I might as well post it here since it seems to be a good topic.

As most of you know, plenty of Avex MVs look really low budget. Just to show you the difference between what they look like after they've been enhanced, here's a comparison between the so-called 'Original', which is just a plain old IVTC of the video, and one which has been filtered to bring out as much detail as possible without introducing mosquito noise.

Frame number is after the decimation of every 5th frame.
Both are encoded in visually lossless mode.

Look at the stones on her right. Just to the left of the flowers and leaves. So much more detail is brought out.
And on the right of the picture, under the bunch of leaves. The stones are smeared with ICTV alone but pores in the rocks after they've been enhanced.

Usually there will be lots of aliasing in this kind of scene but there's none here for a change. Look at the trunk of the palm trees, there's more detail. The ring thingies are brought out. Design on the skirt of the one in blue (whatever her name is) is sharper. Well, everything is sharper in general too anyway.

Quick look at the flowers on her and you can see the difference. The leaf in the foreground tells quite a story too. Last and not least, more detail. Look at the rocks. Tonnes more of it.

And for those who are interested, here's the script for enhancing the video.
Just about everything is done with Motion Compensation so this will not be a fast script.

# Field Match and Edge Sharpening
a = MPEG2Source("C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\Desktop\Encode\Hinoi Team_King Kong_Edit\Hinoi Team_King Kong_Edit.d2v").tfm().tdecimate().asharp(0.5,1.5,1.5,true)

# Noise Reduction
b = a.mc_spuds()

# Detail Enhancement
c = seeSaw(a,b,NRlimit=3, NRlimit2=4, Sstr=1.5, Slimit=5, Spower=5, Sdamplo=6, Szp=16)

# Increase Contrast and Colours
d = c.YLevelsS(20,1,240,0,255).Tweak(sat=1.15)

# Remove Very Irritating Borders
e = d.crop(0,62,0,-58)

return e

#Anti-Aliasing

 o = last
 Assumeframebased().AssumeTFF().SeparateFields()
 dbl   = mt_Average( SelectEven().EEDI2(field=1,maxd=4),
 \				  SelectOdd() .EEDI2(field=0,maxd=4), U=3,V=3 )
 dblD  = mt_MakeDiff(o,dbl,U=3,V=3)
 shrpD = mt_MakeDiff(dbl,dbl.RemoveGrain(11),U=3,V=3)
 DD	= shrpD.Repair(dblD,13)

 dbl.mt_AddDiff(DD,U=3,V=3)

 return o
See 2nd post for comparison with commercial software.

Edit:

I guess this should go under Non-BoA Downloads but I think I'll put it here since it's the video that's been worked on.

Nvidia 9800GX2

06 January 2008 - 08:40 AM

With this kind of price to performance ratio, ATi is in deeper poop than before. How long before something they come out with rivals Nvidia's high end offerings? Been over a year already.

http://www.tomshardw...eforce_9800gx2/

We know that the 9800GX2 has 2 printed circuit boards (PCBs), as did the 7950GX2 in its time, two graphics processing units (GPUs) using 65 nm nodes (most likely G92s with 128 stream processors), 1 GB of memory (512 MB for each GPU) and two DVI outputs.

We don't know yet if the GeForce 9800GX2, which is supposed to be 30% faster than the 8800 Ultra, will support Quad SLI configurations.

The expected price: around $449 US. Expected announcement date: February 14, 2008.
