In Wonder Girl's recent visit to Korea, they appeared on Variety/Talk show "Golden Fishery" with JYP .

On of the questions asked to JYP was:

Quote

To JYP: You succeeded awhile Seven and Boa did not ?

I didn't know Koreans considered BoA's attempt a complete failure considering she hasn't yet confirmed to have backed out of her American career. I feel sad that in BoA's home country this is how they're seeing her most recent activity .. I wonder how Jumping BoA feels right now.

well...tbh...i think if SM effectively "market" BoA then she would have been fine...but
seriously they should have used that money on a korean comeback instead..
that's my opinion on this matter...

Well, BoA didn't really fail either. But she didn't really succeed >_> She can always try again, and this isn't like her only chance or something.

I don't care so much about the "failure" as the "success" of the WG?
Hot 100 =\= success... it must be the articles/JYP phrased it and fooled Korea into thinking that WG were successful here.
Until the results of their album are out, you can't say that they're successful here.
They have as many radio plays as BoA, and their sales are only a few k higher... that's not exactly success.

They probably judged the results of her album/Deluxe album to judge her failure here.
It's true that she didn't say she was leaving America, but judging by her current activities in Japan, the major flop TWICE, and the lack of attention in America, you could say she's a failure here.

Neither BoA nor Se7en are exactly relevant in K-pop anyways, and neither are even close to being as popular/liked in Korea (ATM) as WG, so they probably didn't care too much to actually look into all the details.

I am korean and living in Seoul.

Koreans don't really know that.

but the thing is, JYP loves to mess with media. he exaggerate, make it all bigger and flashier

whatever he and WG did.

not the part where they dumped their singles for a dollar at a clothing store

to get the sales up.

but when BoA got on the billboard, SM didn't really boast things like that.....

few articles saying... she has reached 127 on Billboard 200. but she'll try harder... that was it.

but JYP just had to come up to a national TV to talk about that 'PROUD' week on hot100 (of course not the 'dumping' part)

JYP even said that album chart was easier cuz japan and korean fans could have bought it.... aiming for BoA.

I was appalled by his childishness...... FYI billboard doesn't count the ones delivered to non-U.S regions.

yak he disgust me

I wouldn't count them a success either until they have their songs playing on the radio nonstop.

Besides, I understand why a lot of people are disappointed Boa didn't make that much of a hit in the U.S., but you have to think that this is her FIRST time. Utada didn't do so great either on her first album even though she is very well respected in Japan, just like BoA. Utada had more going for her on the second album, but she still didn't make that much of a wave either.

SM had great producers on their side and JYP has the Jonas Brothers. For the Wonder Girls, I would wait until they actually release their album out (and I swear they said it'd be out by September, or maybe they changed it to November), and then see how they chart on the Billboard, then we can see if they made as much success as Boa or not.

BoA may not have taken the usa by storm yet, but neither have Wonder Girls. Heck I havent heard there song once over here, at least BoA was on tv, her music videos were on tv, she got radio play, performed at various events, and had interviews.

Wonder Girls are not what americans wanna hear, the girly pop phase has been done to death and died out in the 90's.

LOL since when did the Wondergirls succeed in America? They've barely scratched what the REAL market is, BoA was getting there but something happened along the way whether it was SM's fault or just Avex I'm not sure. BoA could have done really well if she kept at it. Wondergirls and JYP have no idea what it is like yet. I feel that using Jonas Brothers will work for a little bit but after awhile it will just start going down like the rest. I believe that they wont be here for TOO long. *I might be wrong*

What did you guys expect? She blew in America, but she gave us a good album.

It's bull when they say WG is successful. Ugh, you sell 30k and you are sucessful? So I guess Utada was successful the first time around too, since her album sold about 50k. Too bad they all called her a failure too when she went back to Japan.

THERE IS NO SHAME IN FAILING.

There are the sucessful, and there are the failures. It's life. Nothing to feel 'bad' for.
But it's shameful when you deny that you failed, so stop giving excuses and saying "BoA did not fail!".

And I smell a strong scent WG hate approaching. Haha, I still love Nobody, though.

BoA did not "Fail" sorry to say, she never stopped and we still don't know her actual status. I believe that she scratched barely..... LOL I swear she didn't fail. For what we believed how the album was going to come out it did pretty well. the Hot 100 is nada, many of the hot 100's are unknown artist that are barely making it through the internet and most of them are digital singles. No one has really failed yet, with exception of Se7en who has fully stopped due to the army stuff.

Guys I don't want to be mean, but she failed this time around in America. Her album has come out for more then half a year.
She sold like what? Less than 20k? Most likely that was only her fans purchasing her album.
She scratched the market barely...maybe, but she still failed.
When you make three (four?) MVs to promote a single album, and that album cannot even more then her last single single in Japan, which I believe Eien sold around 25k, I don't know what you can call that but a fail. I doubt too many new fans emerged from her trip to America.
Get over it and hope for the better the next time BoA comes to America.

Fail or not, I'm sure BoA did not regret her decision to try to break into that market. She was able to perform for a new audience, released a decent album, and was able to work with good producers, and for me, that's what is most important.

HOWEVER, it pains and irritates me when I hear things like this. WG? Succeeded? When? I'll accept that when I see their MV playing non-stop in the MTV channel and when they have won in a single prestigious awards event in the US.

Honestly, wondergirls are so overated and they are so-called successful because of an overated song called 'nobody', which to me is nothing but an upbeat mediocre pop song. Their english is kind of terrible and they can't really sing or dance well either...

this is not to say that BoA's english album is really successful either. Although i do like her english album, but we have to accept that dance song is too common and there's this 'lack of something special' kind of feeling, both vocally and musically.

Anyway what do ppl mean by fail or success? does BoA has to become as famous as kelly clarkson or mariah carey before she is considered success? please, it's only her first try.

BoA did not fail and neither has Utada. Both of them are top artists in Japan, which is the second biggest music industry in the world besides america. Thus, they have to juggle both industries well in order to maintain the quality of their music and their statuses as well. Moreover, BoA is under different labels in different industry so maybe she just have to return to japan after a long time in usa.

i don't know if she failed or what in the states since i don't live there but all i can say is this was what happened to her in Japan too right?!..it took her quite sometime to break into the jpop mainstream..i believe that that could also happen to her American career...let's just give her some time..and i hope her agencies would market her effectively next time..i'll still be waiting for her activities in america..
