Over 3,000 hopefuls showed up to audition for the chance to become the next K-Pop star, and received the rare opportunity to perform for BoA. BoA was said to have given out friendly, helpful advice from her experience as a top star in the music industry for the past decade.
An official stated, “With her sharp and precise commentary, she was able to tell auditionees exactly what area they needed to work on. She received praise for her warm and helpful advice from both the auditionees and producers.”
The tryouts made sure to express their thanks to the star, and commented, “Just having the chance to perform in front of BoA was an honor. Regardless of whether we passed the audition or not, it was a helpful experience.”
BoA also amused onlookers when she gav a happy smile every time a male contestant walked in with a guitar. She commented, “I wonder if I’m just attracted to men who sing while playing a guitar“, causing everyone at the scene to laugh.
The production staff stated, “BoA’s soft charisma captivated the scene. Although she is much younger than YG‘s Yang Hyun Suk and JYP‘s J.Y. Park, any concerns that people had about her age disappeared within seconds. With her vast knowledge and experience with music, BoA will open a new horizon of possibilities in the field of audition program judging. Please look forward to seeing a new side of BoA.”
SBS’s ‘K-POP Star’ is expected to hit the airwaves sometime in December, so make sure to keep an eye out for this exciting audition program!

The SBS broadcasting network announced on Nov. 22 that the first episode of Survival Audition K Pop Star will be broadcast at 6:04 p.m. on Dec. 4.
Recently, there has been buzzing rumors concerning the audition reality show but without revealing definite broadcasting date and time of the show. That’s why the recent announcement is raising expectations among viewers.
What’s most noticeable is that the show has to compete rival programs on the same prime-time slot, which have shown relatively higher viewer ratings, such as MBC’s I Am A Singer and KBS’s One Night and Two Days. Despite such outstanding long-lived shows, there are high expectations that K Pop Star will be fully ready to appeal to viewers of the prime time.
For the show,Korea’s top 3 entertainment agencies joined forces: SM, JYP and YG. Yang Hyun Suk, Park Jin Young and BoA are preparing to set out in search for real talents through the audition program.
The production team says, “The broadcasting date for the first episode of K Pop Star was finally fixed. We can feel a tense atmosphere surrounding the three big-name jury judges and audition contestants. We’re trying out best to create the best audition show in history. It is highly expected to cause a huge sensation among viewers who want to see a new concept of audition shows.”
The final winner will be granted cash prize of 300 million won and a rare chance to release his/her independent album, also awarded a car and an opportunity to appear in a TV commercial as an additional prize.

"KPOP STAR" judges seeking talent and potential over skills
From left, JYP Entertainment founder and C.E.O Park Jin-young, female artist BoA, and YG Entertainment founder and C.E.O Yang Hyun-suk pose during a press conference for new talent search program "KPOP STAR" held in Seoul on November 24, 2011. [SBS]
Talent and potential, rather than skills, are what will win over Korean pop sensation BoA and singer-producers Park Jin-young and Yang Hyun-suk, the famed judges of upcoming talent show "KPOP STAR."
The three appeared at a press conference in Seoul on Thursday for the new show, set to premiere on December 4, which will be a global auditioning show in search of the next K-pop star.
"These are times when no matter how good a person is at singing and may even become the winner of our show, it is difficult for that person to become a popular singer in the music industry," Yang, also founder of YG Entertainment started by saying.
"So we want to choose an individual that has a singing voice that is different from the singers in the current music market and that is why our current top candidates are the ones with talent and potential."
JYP Entertainment founder and chief Park quipped in, "We dropped people no matter how good they were at singing. And what we were looking at was that they didn't have any habits. We also dropped people who were not singing in their own voice, a voice we haven't heard before."
He also added, "There are two lines that all three of us said the most, one being, 'You're really good at singing but you have failed' and the other 'You're really bad at singing but you're in.'"
One's singing skills was not and will not be a decisive factor for SM Entertainment discovered and trained BoA either. "As many of you already know, SM takes one's character into a lot of consideration and that's because if you have good character although you may lack in other ways, you'll realize and accept what you lack at."
Tens of thousands of people had tried for the show at preliminary auditions held in Buenos Aires in Argentina, Paris in France, New York and Los Angeles in the United States, and Beijing in China, as well as in Korea in September.
The three then got together in early November for another round of auditions to decide on the 75 teams that would appear on the show where they will undergo several more rounds of auditions.
Viewers will also get to see the contestants receive training by YG Entertainment, SM Entertainment and JYPE, the three major music agencies in Korea.
Contestants will be judged on various aspects such as singing and dancing and the winner of the show will receive prize money and secure a contract with one of the three agencies.

K-pop star Yang Hyun Suk said, “BoA is so stern”
Yang Hyun Suk said that BoA is so stern.
On November 24, at a press interview for SBS’s Survival Audition K-pop Star,Yang Hyun Suk said,I know many people have expected me to make biting remarks the most during the audition.” ”
He added, “I understand that people think about me like that. I don’t usually appear on TV show and the singers in YG entertainment company used to say that I am a disciplinarian. But, I was surprised at BoA. She is so stern.”
To his remarks, BoA said, “I’m not stern. I’m just plain-spoken.”
Yang Hyun Suk, however, keeps saying, “All the judges usually tend to think about their good image on the show except BoA. She is err on the side of being stern.”
He added, “Park Jin Young is so passionate that he teaches all the applicants on the preliminary line. He got tired and bled at the nose. I thought that there should be one person who is nice. And, that’s me.” People laughed.
All the auditions have been finished in the Argentine Republic, France, USA, and in China, including South Korea. Tens of thousands of applicants had the auditions.
On November 7, 8, and 9, the judges met the applicants for the first time and had a pleasant time judging them to find out next stars.
The winner will be granted 300 million won as a reward and have an opportunity to release his or her album in the world market. Also, the winner will take a commercial film and a vehicle will be provided.
The first show will be aired on December 4 at 6:40 p.m.

Yang Hyun Suk, Park Jin Young, and BoA talk about ‘K-pop Star’
The audition program K-pop Star‘s judges Yang Hyun Suk, Park Jin Young, and BoA recently talked about the differences in the program.
The three judges attended a press conference for SBS’s survival audition K-pop Star on November 24 and talked about the program’s strong points.
Park said, “JYP hasn’t signed any contracts with people from other audition programs. Mainly because we haven’t found anyone we want to offer a contract to. But on K-pop Star there have been at least 5 people we want to sign. That’s the biggest difference.”
Yang said, “The strongest point of the program is that winners can choose the best agency for them. I’m worried that a person who I like might go to SM.”
BoA said, “Talent or skill is important but I consider their personalities the most important factor. I was happy to see the participants improving their skills everyday. The biggest thing to think about is how we will mentor the participants.”
The program is a survival program, where Korea’s top three agencies, including SM, YG, and JYP, gather together to discover K-pop stars.
The winner will receive a 300 million won monetary prize and will get the chance to release a worldwide album. Additionally they will get to shoot a commercial and win a car. The show will start airing on December 4 at 6:40 p.m.

BoA, Yang Hyun Suk and J.Y. Park hold a press conference for SBS’s “Survival Audition K-Pop Star”
On the afternoon of November 24th, SM’s BoA, YG’s Yang Hyun Suk and JYP‘s J.Y. Park attended the official press conference for SBS‘s“Survival Audition K-Pop Star”, which took place at the SBS headquarters in Seoul.
When asked if there were any contestants that stood out in her memory, BoA answered, “To be honest, there were a lot. There were two contestants that I can recall clearly. One of them was physically disabled and it would’ve been difficult for him to dance, but his efforts moved me to tears.”
“When we mentored the contestants, I gave one contestant some advice and the next day, his singing improved to an extent that was impossible to put in words. Seeing things like that gave great joy to the producers, as it was these moments that gave them hope of digging up truly hidden talents. Although I’m a singer, for a moment I was able to feel the bliss that the show’s producer felt,” she added.
With regards to being part of the judging panel of the contest, CEO Yang Hyun Suk revealed, “Contestants who could’ve gotten first place in other singing programs were cut. Also, contestants who we weren’t fully convinced with proceeded to the top rounds. I think our vision is a lot different to that of the mass public. (The final contestants) aren’t like former ‘Superstar K’ contestants Kang Seung Yoon and Kim Eun Bi, who we signed into our agency last year.”
He continued, “I think the course of explaining our different vision is one of the fun elements of the show. To be honest, we even signed a contestant who was eliminated from the preliminary rounds of ‘Superstar K3′”.
J.Y. Park stated, “For JYPE, we’ve never contracted former contestants or winners from other audition programs, simply because they weren’t who we wanted. The winners expressed their desire to enter our company, but we didn’t want them with us, so we didn’t sign a contract. However, for ‘K-Pop Star’, we’re not even in the final rounds and we already have five contestants who we’d like to sign with.”
He added, “If there were two sentences that we said the most in the auditions, it would be: ‘You sing really well, but we will not accept you to the next round”, and “You sing terribly, but we’ll accept you to the next round’. The contestants who were really good at singing but were imitating the voice of an already existing singer were all eliminated. We wanted to listen to new voices.”
Yang Hyun Suk said, “If you look at how manager Gus Hiddink managed to raise the status of Korean soccer, you’ll know why we did what we did. Out of all the players in the professional soccer league, Hiddink didn’t choose the best players — he chose those who had the greatest potential. To be honest, it’s difficult for anyone to maintain their popularity in the music industry with vocals alone. We’re looking for someone with a voice that has yet to be seen in the industry.”
Yang Hyun Suk also expressed that he feels a good bond between J.Y. Park and BoA after endless hours of judging together. “During our last press conference, I remember joking about how I was worried because I wasn’t close with BoA. …However, after numerous recording sessions and rigorous 17 hour schedules, I feel I’ve become a lot closer with BoA and J.Y. Park.”
He laughed and added, “We didn’t talk that much, but seeing her today like this was very welcoming. The last time we saw each other was actually this morning.” It was reported that the three judges as well as MC Yoon Do Hyun were still on set of the show at 4 AM earlier that day.
In related news, the final winner of “K-Pop Star” will receive prize money worth $260,000 USD along with a contract to produce an album for the worldwide market. They will also receive an additional price of CF contract and a brand new car.
The first broadcast of “K-Pop Star” is scheduled to air this coming December 4th at 6.40 PM KST.
