Since I've seen multiple posts with questions on how to extract files from .rar files and how to join different parts into one video, I've decided to make a tutorial to make things easier :D. This tutorial is based on the Windows Operating System. If you have Apple, it will be slightly different.

Table of Contents:

1. EXTRACTING FILES A.K.A. JOINING MULTIPLE PARTS INTO ONE FILE:
  • Using WinRAR
  • Using HJ Split
2. SPLITTING ONE FILE INTO DIFFERENT PARTS:
  • Using WinRAR
  • Using HJ Split
3. HOW TO TAKE SCREENSHOTS OF VIDEOS:
  • Using Media Player Classic (for multiple images or single images)
  • Using VLC Player (for single images only)

----------------------------------------------------------
1. How to join multiple parts into one single video:
Most of the split files I've seen around are ones that are in .rar format. Occasionally there might be parts that end in .001, .002, etc. One of the main differences between these two is that WinRAR is like a box that seals the file and then cuts it up into different parts so you need all the parts in order to get the original file. HJSplit sees a file like a piece of rope. It cuts the "rope" evenly and when you combine it, it just glues the ends together again. With .001, .002, etc files, you CAN view the parts separately, whileas you can't with WinRAR. (Actually, I think you probably can but it is probably some complicated step :o). Please refer below for specific steps to deal with both types.

Using WinRAR for .RAR files: The program you will need to extract .rar files is WinRAR. Click Here to download. The most recently version is WinRAR 3.70. Download and install the program.

1. When you download a file, make sure you have all the .rar parts in the SAME folder. It should end with ".part1.rar", ".part2.rar" etc. Also, make sure that the file names of all the parts are the same EXCEPT for the partx.rar (x being 1, 2, etc). (see notes)
Posted Image
^Here are 2 different videos. The first video has 3 parts and the second video has 2 parts. Notice the 3 parts to the first video have exactly the same name. Same thing with the second video.

2. Right click on the first part and go to extract here.

3. A small window will pop up and it will begin extracting by itself. Once it is done, the window will go away and you will have the video file. At this point, feel free to delete all the .rar parts.

NOTES:
-When extracting files, some of the parts you download may be corrupted (it will tell u which part is corrupted). Try downloading that corrupted part again and combine the parts together.
-Instead of ".part1.rar", you may see the ending as ".part1" only. This means that your extensions are hidden. Open your folder, go to: TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS>click on VIEW tab. You will see the below image. Uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types."

Using HJ Split for .001, .002, etc. files: The program you will need to join .001, .002, etc files will be HJ Split. Click Here to download. The most recently version is HJ Split 2.3. Download and install the program.

1. When you download a file, make sure you have all the parts in the SAME folder. It should end with ".001", ".002" etc. Also, make sure that the file names of all the parts are the same EXCEPT for the .00x (x being 1, 2, etc). (see notes above)

2. Open the hjsplit.exe program. Click on JOIN. Click on INPUT FILE and find the first part. Then click OPEN. By default, the joined file will be in the same folder as the split parts. You can change the location of the joined file by clicking on OUTPUT FILE and choosing a new location.
Posted Image

3. Click on START. It will begin "working" and when it gets to 100%, a small alert will say "Joining Completed." You can delete all the parts now :P.

----------------------------------------------------------
2. How to split a file into multiple parts:

Using WinRAR for .RAR parts:

1. First make sure you have the program and it is installed. If not, refer to above.

2. Right click on the file you want to split. Go to "add to archive" and the following window should pop up:
Posted Image

3. By where the red arrow is, type in the size of each of the parts you want it to be. *Make SURE that there is no space btwn the # and the mb. For example, if you want to split it into 50 MB files each.. make sure you type "50mb." I learned the hard way; I typed a space in the middle.. and it ended up splitting into 100 different parts of a 1 mb each :D.

Using HJ Split for .001, .002, etc. parts:

1. Make sure you have HJ Split on your computer (if not refer to above).

2. Open the hjsplit.exe program and click on SPLIT. In the INPUT FILE area, search for the file you want to cut. Change the location of the OUTPUT FILE if desired. In the "Split file size" box, just enter the size you want each file to be. By default it should be scrolled on Kbytes, so change it to Mbytes.

3. Click Start and everything should go smoothly :).

----------------------------------------------------------
3. How to take screencaptures of videos:

Using Media Player Classic:
1. Download and install the program. There's various places to get it but here is one place. The newest version right now is Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0

2A. FOR MULTIPLE CAPS: Open the program and open the video file. Click on START>SAVE THUMBNAILS. Next to thumbnails, there are rows & columns; you can select the number of frames you want in each row/column. You can also select the image width (in pixels). Click save and see the results :D.
Posted Image

2B. FOR SINGLE CAPS: Open the program and open the video file. Freeze the video at the desired location and go to FILE>SAVE IMAGE. :P

Using VLC Player:
1. Download and install the program. Get it here.

2. Open the video with VLC Player. Click on pause to freeze the video at a specific frame.

3. Then click on VIDEO>SNAPSHOT. By default, it should save into your screencaps in My Documents\My Pictures.

^The screen isn't supposed to be black but it just shows up like this :o.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this helps clear some confusion! =/

It should join any type of file as long as both files are the same format. I just tested it on 2 mp3s and it worked too . You will have to rename the parts (make sure your extensions are not hidden). For example:

My Sassy Girl.avi.001
My Sassy Girl.avi.002

Then use HJ Split and it'll combine the files automatically. The second video will start exactly where the first video ends. So, hope you don't mind the extra repeats :D. If you'd like, you can use another program to cut out the repeats. You can google for various programs (a lot of them are freeware too ). I haven't really tested it out so I can't recommend one.

You can actually just right click the video > snapshot. More convenient. Larger area to click on =p

MPC can do single frame screenshots too.
Press CTRL+I or File > Save Image

Posted Image

Or you could do it with FFDShow too.
Right click the part where the video is being played back > Filters > FFDShow video decoder > Grab > Grab
Or you could open FFDShow from the tray where the icon is.

Another thing...
Select Store in the compression method so that it will just split the files without compressing, saving you a lot of times, especially with big video!

Wrong output. Change it to VMR9.
