If winning was to die, what then happens to people who wish to contribute to society? Obviously nothing, no one recognizes them for any contribution. Even you, raising this idea of winning has some merit, you wish to say that winning may be dangerous, but doesn't winning give you the desire to be something more?
If we weren't to push ourselves, or even like you say "wrack ourselves" due to defeat, what then is there to look back on when you come out successful?
And then the question you have to ask yourself is, "does defeat mean you haven't won?"
And hopefully, the answer is no. When you're "defeated" you gain something out it, experience; something that can't be given or taken away.
