As disappointing as that is, I'm not really devastated by this. Let me explain why
In the U.S. , the music market is much different than in Japan. Japan, first week sales are the BULK of the total album sales, everything is focused on the first week and then after a few weeks the album drops and drops and drops and usually never reclaims anywhere near the spot it used to be.
In AMERICA, first week album sales are USUALLY the highest, although this is proving to grow weaker and weaker, also first week album sales are NOT the bulk of the album sales. This is how a lot of Japanese artists are able to chart on the United World Chart at number 1, their first week sales are crazy but they plummet there after ( this is why mainting NO.1 on the oricon chart for more than one week is such a huge feat in Japan, it usually signifies a top album of that year)
In the U.S., many artists eventually climb back up the chart and many artists DON'T have the peak sales on the FIRST WEEK. Taylor Swift's album always managed to randomly climb back up to the top 10 sporadically since it has been releasead (usually correlating with her new singles) Christina's STRIPPED album did okay the first week but ended up being one of the highest selling albums released during then. The best example is LADY GAGA who only sold 24,000 her first week (albeit way higher than BoA) and then plummeted off the chart, but as of late she came back to top the chart peaking at No. 4 not too long ago even though she debuted at No. 17 for her first week.
The bulk of sales aren't made during the first week, it's through strong continuous sales in the U.S. that makes albums sell so much. So hopefully BoA will experience this biggrin.gif If she commits to strong promotions like GaGa did by making a lot of performances worldwide and hitting up a lot of small venues to spread her songs to other DJ's, eventually her song could potentially top the Hot 100 which would revitalize her sales. So just because her first week isn't that great, doesn't mean her album has flopped or failed. Maybe in a year if nothing picks up then we can determine that. Hopefully though, with a lot of support, we can spread BoA around and get her up! So everyone start requesting for her songs! biggrin.gif My suggestion though would be to not do as many promotional activities in Asia and focus on the Western World which includes Europe and Australia etc.

I'd laugh if she made it to #51 or something and sold 8k. Not likely, but it's funny if you think about it.
RichYungSociety
The people who think that she even came close to cracking the Billboard 200 are very naive.
She got little to no promotion here in the States. That's SM's fault for the poor marketing and rush delivery of the album. I was at BestBuy the date of release right when it opened at the one location within 1000 miles of where I lived that had the CD in stock and there were only 2 copies available. That basically shows the lack of demand for Boa in the States. Her music video was rarely if ever played on MTV or other music channels which didn't help either.
I guarantee that she did not sell more than 5,000 units in the US and even that is being optimistic. As much as I wanted a Korean pop artist to succeed in the US, it seems that I'll have to wait to see that day.

at least i helped by buying two copies from amazon.

You have to realize that SM is a very SMALL, teeny weeny, independent label in the US. The money is not there to put her out all over the place like a big American label, Korean record companies just don't have money like that (Why do you think they try so hard to break Japan and the US? It's because that's where the big money is). And BoA is still unknown by the general public in the USA so OF COOOOOOURSE there is no demand. There can't be a demand for something if no one knows it exists. Her video isn't played on MTV because it isn't even out yet (unless you mean EYU). Honestly, I don't really see how you're being optimistic at all... sounds very pessimistic if you ask me. Anyone who doesn't know BoA has already said she has what it takes, just give it some time. As many have stated before the US industry works differently than it does in Asia. In Japan if you debut at #175, that's most likely as high as you're gonna get. But in the US if you debut at #175 you actually do still have a chance to make it...

Look at:

Lady GaGa (everyone's #1 example lol)
Taylor Swift
Jonas Brothers

for example.

None of them were an instant success.
Even Jonas' first album was a flop.
So just give it some time.. if all else fails SM can get her a Disney contract LOL (jk!)

If she sold 5000 units she most certainly would crack in the top 200.

I would be surprised if she didn't chart at all. While it's just two retailers, she did do fairly well last week at iTunes and Amazon, if she sold a couple thousand between the two, that would get her on the chart at least.

My friend just told me the following thing that happened to him laugh.gif. I thought it was really funny and I had the same reaction when I read the first half of it. You know those elevators with lcd screens on the walls where they show news highlights?? Welll... tongue.gif:

"LOL Last night I was working late at empire state building and when I was leaving I looked up at the screen and it said "BoA board of directors has decided not to expand in the U.S. in the foreseeable future". After I read this line I was thinking to myself 'since when did BoA or singers in general need a board of directors?? Also, didn't you tell me about BoA coming back for a concert or something later this year. I'm thinking aren't they suppose to have agents instead?'

It took me like 15 minutes after I left the elevator to realize they meant Bank of America! biggrin.gif"

Kelly Clarkson Stays On Top Of Billboard 200

No mention of BoA. In my experience with the record industry... I would have to say I'm not surprised. And for everyone who is attributing BoA not charting because of her music video... MTV doesn't even play music videos anymore. If you want to give her exposure on MTV you're better off trying to get her a reality TV show because that's all they show. thumbsup.gif dry.gif

Oh God, please no!
If they played her music in a reality show, that's fine.
Because they at least show what songs are played at the bottom of the screen.
But please, no BoA MTV reality show... unless it's a show about her debut LoL

As a little known Jmetal band in the US, Dir en grey's US debut Uroboros managed to hit Billboard 114 with 6,054 copies sold of an album with most songs sung entirely in Japanese. It was released and distributed by a very small metal label with even less connections than SM USA and had far less overall promotion in the US than BoA. If they could crack Billboard 200, with all the resources, namebrand producers, and manpower in LSM's arsenal, I'm certain BoA will do the same with better results (^__^)...

thatis so wierd
I mean
okay, there are so many asians in America
and there are so many asians that like BoA in america too

and with so many people buying more than one copies of her

there's a possibility that she only got 1000 copies sold?????????

it just doesn'tmake sense

i mean she's got at least 30 , 000 friends on facebook

if one out of ten people got her album, and that would still be three thousand copies.

it just doesnt' make sense

even five thousand doesn't make sense

I mean Utada Hikaru on her Exodus was able to sell less than 30,000 but still around there

i probably dont understand how this works but
it's just wierd to me O_o

Most people are just throwing numbers around. Nobody has any idea how much she's sold, only that it was apparently not enough to get into the top 50. We won't know until somebody gets their hands on the SoundScan numbers.

I just got my CD's from Amazon. I'm pretty disappointed cos I ordered 3 copies, one for me and some for my friends, and ALL of the CD cases are cracked. They could have packed them a bit better. sad.gif

It says from the News section of Boajjang that her Girls on Top MV was supposed to be released today. I've checked MTV Iggy and it's still not there. =( Sucks.

you could exchange them for other copies because they're 'damaged' items
i've done that twice... one happened to be the Sweet Impact single and i had to wait over a week to get another copy XD
it was worth it tho LOL

I'm so tired of people thinking they know how the recording industry works and start mouthing off all this random crap thinking they've really got how things work stateside or overseas. It's really pathetic.

it's not the MV. it was the Girls on Top (in Korean) performance in New York at MTV Iggy.

I'm currently in American soil at the buffalo airport....they don't sell CDs here do they? lol kidding about the CD part and the chances of seeing BoA's album here is unlikely. I should have asked my niece to buy the CD for me before coming here picking her up. Gar.

Anyway, nice to see she achieved some success in the billboard - it's better than I expected. I knew it'd be low but...wow blink.gif Now she just gotta build her way up there. It's up to the rest of America now. Let's go fire ourselves at the Radio request thread.

I'm not sure if that's good or bad. I mean I've been checking around my local stores looking for the album and I just have had no luck. At this time I can't even buy it online. This sucks. I know she didn't get much promotion but they at least couldn't have sent a decent amount of copies to stores. I shall continue looking and do my part. I even made a big huge facebook note saying "BUY THIS ALBUM" lol.

But I think she would've had to sell at least upward to 250,000 copies to have cracked I believe the top 5. Britney's Blackout only managed to sell about a bit above 250,000 and she got number 2. Perhaps SM wanted to know how much she would sell just by pure fanbase alone. And now that we know, the real media blitz will start to happen.

The #1 album this week (Kelly Clarkson) sold 86,957 copies. My guess is BoA probably sold around 5,000 or less. I hope we get the actual number soon.

Utada may have charted lower but she probably sold more copies because CD sales were a lot higher years ago. How much did Utada sell in her first week anyway? Does anyone know?

According to David Archuleta's fans, his CD which is ranked at #125 on Billboard (2 spots above BoA) sold around 4,000 copies this week so that gives us an idea of how much BoA sold.

Definitely an indie (SM/Arsenal) but under a major distributor (Fontana). There are only four major distributors (WMG, UMG, Sony, and EMI now owned by Terra Firma who might sell it again) and 5 major labels/publishers (Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) which as of last year sold it's shares to Sony, and EMI)

Has anyone noticed how BoA's ad on Perez is gone now? ):

Anyways, congratz to her for making the top 200- I just went on wiki and there was a number, 4255, I think. I'm not sure if that's how much she managed to sell but it was there.
