Meet BoA
My friends in Korea ask me, "Is BoA really big there?"
Yes. You go out downtown in Tokyo, and the streets of Shibuya, Harajuku and Aoyama are filled with huge billboards advertising her albums and concerts. The Journal met BoA, who is off to a smooth start with her new album "Best of Soul," ranking top on Oricon album chart.

The Journal: Your new album "Best of Soul" has sold more than 900,000 copies already and reaching a million is just a matter of time. How do you feel?
BoA: It means a lot to me because I've become the first Korean singer to sell a million copies of a Japanese album. More Japanese people are attracted to Korean singers these days, and I think many Korean singers soon will be able to succeed in Japan.
Tell us about your new album.
The album features 16 songs including hit tracks like Listen to my Heart, Amazing Kiss, and Valenti. The bonus track, La La Love Song, features Japanese hip-hop group Soul'd Out.
It was Valentine's Day yesterday. Was it a special day for you?
Not really. I just made an appearance on Super Live on NHK and performed a mini concert singing 11 songs from my album, including Listen to my Heart, Valenti, and Miracle. I love mini concerts. I can have a strong bond with fans throughout the performance and that's quite thrilling.
When was the most memorable trip lately?
When I visited Taiwan, I was surprised by their kindness and sweetness. I went there to attend "2005 HITO Popular Music Awards," but I felt like I was taking a short vacation for a couple of days. Besides, I was happy to receive an award. Actually, I didn't expect to receive it because I've not been performing much in Taiwan lately.
Some doubt you look different because of surgery.
Britney Spears once commented about the suspicion on her breast surgery, "Hey, I'm still 18 and I'm still growing up." Should I say, "I'm only 19 and I'm getting prettier?" Just kidding. (Laugh) Every time I try new styles, I hear that. Well, I guess that's a good sign, which means I look better over time.
Ideal guy?
I like a hip-hop boy that is cute, tall, and skinny.
What do you do when you're at home?
I play around with my cat Sara. She doesn't leave me alone even for a single minute. We eat, talk, watch TV, and sleep together all day.
What's next?
I'm working on my 15th single, which is yet to be titled. The single will include three songs - cool dance track, medium tempo track, and simple ballad track. I wrote the lyrics for the second song. In April, I'll be on tour concerts in major cities in Japan.
