Q: Who or what is the most popular pop star or band?
A: In Korea right now most popular pop star is Boa. She's only, I think eighteen years old and she got trained since she was in the 5th grade. So, she's... she's very famous in almost asian countries and last year she won the MTV award so all koreans proud of her.

Which made me wonder, just exactly how big is Boa for Korea? Is she just really most popular right now or will she leave a diva-legend impression even after she's gone. Maybe it's too early to tell, what do you think?

I'm not suprised that she's the most popular....BoA is awesome.

Maybe she'll end up leaving a "Marilyn-Monroe"-like legend

Even though that quote relates to South Korea, I wonder about Koreans who listen to Korean music here in the US.

I know a few Korean girls who talked about BoA a lot in 2003, then suddenly now, in 2005....I asked one of the girls if she still liked BoA and she was like, "Huh? Who's BoA?"

Is BoA not as popular among Korean Americans as she was in 2003? (I know for a fact that BoA was really hot among Korean Americans in 2003 since she accomplished the most that year)

Well anyways, is she still #1 in South Korea? I remember back in Late 2004, there was a news article from Yahoo! Korea saying that BoA was losing a lot of her Korean fans because she hardly puts in effort (the article said this) and keep lip synching in Korean performances and always singing live in Japan.

I wouldn't know how popular she is in Korea just because I don't live there but based on people's comments I would think that she is quite popular there. How couldn't she be?

Everyone in Korea knows who BoA is.. maybe not all Korean Americans (since they're a bit more isolated from the country).. but definitely everyone in Korea.

yeah...she's like a 'legend' oredi. 10 years from now...ppl will still remember n know her....like how ppl still knows seo taiji and h.o.t now. I dun think she is as popular now as she was during 2002/2003 but she is still popular. =P

BoA would be very popular, she is a huge, I mean huge phenomenon in Korea and other Asian countries. It makes sense after all!

I'm sure Boa is well known in Korea but I could understand her losing popularity there because she spends even more time in Japan and attention to her japanese fans...

Oh, yeah about the source for that quote. Every delegate for ms universe gets a closeup interview. This was a question that was asked of every delegate and this was ms korea's (2004) response.


Or maybe like Madonna or Celine Dion, but I think it's too early to tell.

Of the few Korean americans that actively listen to korean music, they're all familiar with boa even if they don't pay attention to or like her, so obviously she is well reconized and known to them... I don't know if she's still number one in south korea but if she isn't then who is?

yup... she is quite popular even in spore ..... quite alot of ppl knows BoA even if we dont understand the language..

In terms of album sales, BoA was only the 10th most popular Korean music artist in 2004 (her My Name album only sold 200k copies). But in terms of respect, BoA is probably the most respected Korean music artist, because she is the only Korean to have reached #1 on the Oricon Chart, a feat which she has already accomplished 4 times.

^Uh.. she is much more well-known in Korea than in Japan. If you're talking in terms of album sales, then yes. Though, Japan has more than triple SK's population.

Anyway, back on topic. BoA* has always been popular. As with all celebrities, their fame will rise and fall depending on what path their career takes. Is she popular in SK? Yes. Is she popular in Japan? Definitely. What about everywhere else? She's getting there.

People perceive BoA* to be more popular in Japan, why? Because Japan is a larger body than SK. Hence the greater volume of support. I do not doubt for a second that BoA* is well respected in both countries. She has achieved so much in such a short time that it is impossible not to acknowledge her.

That being said, it is IMHO that she does try alot harder to please her Japanese fans. It seems that she has this special connection to Japan ever since the start of her career.

anyway with her album still on promotion, sales will be good.(currently #2 on HMV chart!)

hahaha I think the statement's quite rite..I mean..when BoA visited Indonesia on Dec 04 there R a lot of korean there..and then I asked one of them that seems to be @ 40's and my question was "is BoA really popular there in Korea..??" she answered " yup, BoA is No.1 in Korea, anyone from kids to elders know who she is..."....heheheh that's quite match with the statement......hehehhehe

actually japan's pop. is only 120million....i think that BoA was even more popular in SK in 2002-2003 than she is now...all of korea mite know who she is but that doesnt mean they like her
